Hack for Humanity: Bangladesh Chapter Invites Innovators to Build AI Solutions for Environmental Challenges

Dhaka, Bangladesh — September 2026: The AI Collective Bangladesh Chapter has announced the launch of “Hack for Humanity: Hack to Protect the Environment,” a team-based software hackathon that challenges young innovators to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and software engineering to address real-world environmental and civic challenges in Bangladesh.

Hosted by American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) at its Kuril campus in Dhaka, the hackathon is part of Hack for Humanity, a global initiative led by The AI Collective. The initiative is bringing together 130 chapters across more than 50 countries during September and October 2026, with participating teams developing technology-driven solutions to pressing challenges within their local communities.

AI for Real-World Environmental Challenges

The Bangladesh chapter is placing a particular focus on the country’s environmental challenges. Participants will be encouraged to identify a genuine problem affecting communities in Bangladesh and propose an AI-powered software solution with the potential to create meaningful social or environmental impact.

The hackathon will give participants an opportunity to move beyond conceptual discussions and explore how emerging technologies can be applied to practical challenges involving sustainability, agriculture, public services and community resilience.

Three-Round Competition

The competition will be conducted through three rounds, allowing teams to develop their ideas progressively.

In Round 1, teams will submit a proposal describing a real problem in Bangladesh and outlining their proposed solution using Software Engineering and AI technologies. The submission deadline for the first round is 30 September 2026.

Following the initial evaluation, shortlisted teams will advance to Round 2, where they will be required to develop a prototype or demonstration of their proposed solution. Participants will have access to online mentoring and technical support during this stage.

In Round 3, the final shortlisted teams will be invited to AIUB in Dhaka to demonstrate their solutions before a panel of judges.

Teams can consist of up to three members, encouraging participants from different academic and professional backgrounds to collaborate and combine technical, domain and creative expertise.

Three Tracks for Innovation

Projects can focus on national challenges across three major tracks:

Climate Resilience and Environmental Sustainability
Inclusive Rural Development and Agriculture
Smart Society and Public Services

These tracks are designed to give participants flexibility to address a broad range of issues while maintaining a focus on solutions that can benefit communities in Bangladesh.

Potential solutions may explore areas such as environmental monitoring, climate adaptation, agricultural intelligence, rural services, public-service accessibility and other technology-enabled approaches to civic challenges.

Who Can Participate?

The hackathon is open to a wide range of emerging innovators. University students from any discipline are eligible to participate, alongside fresh graduates, newly employed individuals and startups established within the last two years.

This broad eligibility reflects the initiative’s emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration and practical innovation rather than limiting participation to computer science or engineering students.

Cash Prizes and Recognition

The strongest teams will compete for cash prizes totaling up to BDT 50,000. Beyond the prize pool, the competition offers participants an opportunity to develop working technology concepts, receive mentoring and present their solutions before a judging panel.

For students and early-stage innovators, the hackathon can also provide a platform to demonstrate their software development, AI and problem-solving capabilities while working on challenges directly connected to Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh hackathon is part of a wider global effort by The AI Collective, a San Francisco-headquartered non-profit community that brings together more than 250,000 leaders, builders and stakeholders across more than 50 countries.

Through its Bangladesh chapter, The AI Collective promotes the ethical and responsible development and use of Artificial Intelligence, while encouraging local communities to explore how AI can contribute to solving real-world problems.

With chapters participating across multiple countries, Hack for Humanity aims to demonstrate how local teams can use technology to respond to challenges specific to their communities while contributing to a broader global conversation around responsible AI innovation.
